Deadlines and Submissions
Please note: The AAG has changed the submission process this year:
- Paper presenters and panelists will submit through the same abstracts/panelists portal. You do not need to be assigned to a session to submit an abstract, but all panelists must have previously agreed to serve on a specific panel.
- Abstract submissions that are not assigned to a session by December 17 will convert to poster presentations.
- Session submissions will remain the same as in previous years.
The AAG accepts all submitted abstracts and organized sessions for presentation. The registration fee must be paid prior to abstract submission. You may only submit one abstract for presentation and serve as a panelist in one panel session. If you opt not to submit an abstract, you may be a panelist twice.

Grounded Relations and Desirable Futures
Our meeting in New York City takes place in uncertain times that challenge the values that make us human—care for life, love of beauty, and appreciation for the earth. What better setting to confront this challenge than a complex, diverse city of nearly 9 million people, with an energy that juxtaposes past and future on every street corner? This year’s theme, Grounded Relations and Desirable Futures, grapples with the history, relationships, and potential of societies and the Earth, asking what part geographers play in healing or harming them.
Geographers are well positioned to think across disciplinary boundaries, to create and use tools critically and in partnership with local communities, and to consider the most important questions of our day. We both inherit and transform the methods, techniques, and tools once made for exploration and empire, which can also be turned toward repair, reciprocity, and restoration.
This year as we gather in Lenapehoking, homeland of the Lenape People, and New York, a place of rich history and cultural tradition for many peoples, we seek to deepen our ethical relations to one another and the institutions we are part of, and work collectively to build a disciplinary home for community and the protection of our planet, making a world in which all people and life can thrive with dignity and self-determination.
Geographers access wide-ranging and extensive space- and place-based methods. What must we watch for to prevent their use for violence and surveillance? How can we turn them toward shared liberation?
Planetary-scale ecological crisis is made worse by politically motivated challenges such as funding cuts and restrictions on data access. Rapidly developing technologies such as AI also raise new ethical and environmental equity questions. How can we put our collective expertise to work to navigate these challenges and protect our planet?
In conversation with the work of the 2026-2028 Presidential Taskforce, this theme invites us to reckon with and transform geography’s institutional and disciplinary relations to Indigenous dispossession, the afterlives of slavery, and accountability for modern-day effects of systemic, historic forces. Whose land are we on? Who built and maintains our buildings? Whose knowledge do we rely on, and how do we share credit and benefit? Presenters are asked to consider our ethical relations to the places and people who make life possible.
The future is often upheld as a goal and a vision, but who is included and who is not? What do we learn when we make time part of our means of analysis? This theme invites us to reflect and build on the temporal turn in geography, but it is also a call to reshape the intimate geopolitics of our relations through how we take up and allocate time in community with one another.

World Geography Bowl
Don’t miss this exciting annual quiz bowl tournament featuring teams of graduate and undergraduate geography students representing each of the AAG’s regional divisions. The tournament is fully staffed by volunteers, who write and edit questions and help run the proceedings as judges, scorekeepers and moderators.

Field Visits and Workshops
Go Beyond the Session Schedule
Help shape the annual meeting experience by organizing a field visit or workshop. These opportunities allow you to extend conversations beyond traditional sessions—whether by guiding peers through the host city or leading an interactive learning experience. Organized by communities, partners, and sponsors, field visits and workshops create meaningful spaces for connection, collaboration, and hands-on engagement.
Design and lead an experience that brings geography to life in the host city. Whether highlighting local landscapes, cultural geographies, or community-based geographic work, these small-group excursions allow you to create memorable, place-based learning experiences.
Field visits require pre-registration due to limited space availability. Attendee fees cover activity costs and administrative support.

FEES
Any cost associated with running a field visit (museum tickets, tour guide honorarium, snacks, etc.) are totaled and passed along to the attendees. In addition to the hard costs, each field visit will be charged a 25% administrative fee on the total cost of the field visit.
Honorarium will be paid based on active signups. Any honorarium rate will be agreed to prior to the opening of the field visit registration.
Please keep in mind that cost-effective experiences tend to be the most popular, and low attendance may lead to cancellation.

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED
- NYC has great public transportation that is user-friendly and environmentally friendly. AAG will rely on public transit rather than buses for events this year.
- NYC subway fare is paid using OMNY, a contactless payment system. Simply tap your contactless credit card, debit card, or smartphone digital wallet (like Apple Pay or Google Pay) directly on the turnstile’s OMNY reader to enter. Standard rides cost $3.
- If you plan to use the subway or other public transit, please communicate this in the field visit description.
- Any questions should be directed to lpalmer@evergreenmeetings.com.
- We do not recommend adding meal costs into the total cost of the field visit as it complicates the restaurant selection and ordering process
- If your field visit runs over a mealtime, you will need to address that the meal is an additional cost in the field visit description
- It is typical practice for field visit organizers to pay the logistical expenses (honorariums, snacks, etc.) and be reimbursed after the conference.
AAG may not market individual field visits to fill space—you are welcome to promote your workshop as you see fit.
Submit your field visitWorkshops provide a platform to share knowledge through interactive, hands-on learning. These sessions are ideal for teaching practical skills, demonstrating tools, or guiding attendees through specialized topics in a collaborative setting.

FEES
Each workshop will be charged a $750 facility fee. This cost can either be sponsored by your organization, an AAG Specialty Group, or passed along and divided among the attendees as the registration fee.
To have the fees covered by an AAG Specialty Group, you must provide an email from the Specialty Group chair giving their written consent to use Specialty Group funds. The email should be sent to lpalmer@evergreenmeetings.com.

- Internet is not complimentary in workshop rooms and is usually prohibitively expensive. If internet is necessary, it is recommended that you order one connection for an instructor demonstration rather than ordering internet for each attendee. If internet for each attendee is absolutely necessary, please indicate the number of connections in the Per-Person Costs section and AAG will obtain a quote for you.
- AAG does not provide handouts or any additional materials for the workshops
- Any food and beverage or additional AV equipment will be added to the total cost of hosting the workshop

NODES
Host an AAG Node
AAG will work with key institutions with the goal of hosting nodes for the 2027 meeting, many with their own unique programming, as well as access points and coordinated activities for the annual meeting. Each node will be based on the “watch party” concept, with an optional component for participating directly in the conference through virtual sessions. The AAG works to create an Annual Meeting that is accessible to all. This includes reasonable accommodations as specified by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). On-site Childcare
AAG is again making an investment to subsidize CAMP AAG, a full-time, professionally-managed and staffed on-site childcare service. Our provider, Accent on Children’s Arrangements, Inc. (ACCENT), will offer age-appropriate activities for children ranging from 6 months to 17 years of age (separated into age-appropriate groups) including curriculum-enriched, hands-on, creative activities, arts and crafts projects, active games, and more.

Visa Information
Visa requirements often change and vary by country, so be sure to visit the U.S. State Department website for the latest information when planning your trip. If you need a visa, be sure to apply early. We recommend applying three to four months before your date of travel to allow sufficient time to process your application.
Travelers entering the United States under the Visa Waiver Program need a valid ESTA approval. The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an online application process used to determine the eligibility of visitors to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program and ESTA.

AAG Event Policies
We strive to create a professional and safe environment for all during AAG events. As part of this effort, we require all attendees to read our policies, so that they can agree to the questions during the registration process.

COVID-19 Information
AAG’s first priority is the health and safety of Annual Meeting attendees and partners. Our goal is to hold a safe event, recognizing it is not possible to remove all risks, in particular concerning COVID-19.
In keeping with local and state guidelines and policies, AAG will not require attendees to show proof of vaccination or wear masks during Annual Meeting events. We recommend that attendees receive all available vaccinations and boosters in advance of the meeting, and wear masks when participating in indoor activities. Masks and hand sanitizer will be available to attendees throughout the meeting spaces.
AAG will follow CDC public health recommendations, and federal, state, and local regulations applicable at the time of the AAG Annual Meeting. AAG will put policies and measures in place to provide a safe environment for all attendees, and AAG may change, update, or add to these requirements at any time as it deems prudent to best protect the health and safety of attendees and others.
