CIAO promotes the critical study of islands, archipelagos, and oceans as lived space and geographic forms for: (a) exploring islands in their singularity, in their multiplicity as archipelagos, and oceans as socio-political spaces, (b) engaging critical theory and social justice approaches to address pertinent issues concerning the social, economic, cultural and political life in islands and oceans, especially those identified by islander communities, (c) building comparative knowledge across islands, archipelagos, and oceans on colonial histories, social inequalities within and across islands, climate crises, and geo-political threats, (d) supporting island communities and their social movements globally in their efforts towards ecological protection, Indigenous and migrant rights, anti-racism, feminism, and alternative economies.
