Plan a Gift for Geography’s Future

Create a legacy for Geography

Geography helps us understand the world and our connections to one another. For generations, AAG has helped geographers find community, share knowledge, develop careers, and contribute through research, teaching, and practice.

A gift to AAG is a way to extend those opportunities to the people who will shape geography next. Whether you choose to give today, make a future commitment, or do both, we would be pleased to help you explore options that reflect your values and goals.

Include AAG in your will or trust

A gift through your will or living trust supports geography’s future while letting you keep control of your assets during your lifetime. You may choose a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or a portion of what remains after other commitments have been met. You can discuss whether your gift should support AAG’s greatest needs or a particular purpose.

If you are considering this option, we would be pleased to provide your attorney with the legal name and information needed to prepare a gift provision. Please speak with us before including a specific restriction or named fund in your documents.

Name AAG as a beneficiary

You may be able to name AAG as a beneficiary of all or part of a retirement account, life-insurance policy, or eligible financial account. This designation is generally made through the provider’s beneficiary form rather than your will. Ask your administrator or insurer about available options and let us know if we can help identify AAG correctly.

Include AAG in your donor-advised fund plans

If you have a donor-advised fund, you can recommend a grant to AAG today. Depending on your sponsor’s policies, you may also be able to recommend AAG as a recipient of remaining assets in the future. Ask your sponsor what is available. If you wish, please let us know about a grant so we may thank you and honor your intentions.

Give directly from an IRA

Eligible donors may be able to direct a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from an IRA to AAG. This is a lifetime gift, distinct from naming AAG as an IRA beneficiary. Ask your IRA custodian to arrange a direct transfer and consult your tax advisor about eligibility and current rules. QCDs cannot be made to donor-advised funds. Please let us know about the transfer so we can identify and acknowledge it.

Give appreciated stock

A gift of appreciated stock may let you support AAG without first selling the shares yourself. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances; please speak with your tax advisor. Before making a transfer, contact AAG for current delivery instructions. Please share your name, the security, approximate number of shares, and intended designation so we can identify and acknowledge your gift.

Recommend a donor-advised fund grant

Ask your fund sponsor to recommend a grant using AAG’s legal name and EIN below. If you would like to support a particular purpose, we would be pleased to discuss that with you before you submit your recommendation.

Make a current gift or pledge

A current gift or a commitment paid over time can help AAG act on opportunities now, while legacy gifts build support for the years ahead. We would be pleased to talk with you about a gift or pledge that reflects the part of geography you most wish to advance.

What your gift can support

Your gift can provide flexible support for AAG’s greatest needs or advance an area especially meaningful to you. Possibilities include student and early-career opportunities; travel and research support; broader participation in geography; lectures and awards; support for Specialty and Affinity Groups; and endowment support that helps AAG continue creating opportunities and convening the field for generations. Please discuss named funds and specific restrictions with us before including them in gift documents.

You do not need to have every detail settled before getting in touch. We can begin with a conversation about what geography has meant to you and the impact you hope your gift will have.

Let us know your plans

If you have included AAG in your will, trust, or beneficiary plans, we would be honored to know. Sharing your intentions allows us to thank you and understand how you hope your gift will be used. Any conversation is confidential, and you may share only the information that feels comfortable to you.
