David Woodward

1942 - 2004

On August 25, 2004, David A. Woodward died at his home in Madison, Wisconsin at the age of sixty-one. A professor of geography at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, he was known for his role as editor for the encyclopedic series of books, the History of Cartography Project that re-examines the place of mapmaking in world history.

Born August 29, 1942, in Royal Leamington Spa, England, Woodward graduated from the University of Wales Swansea and earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1970. He joined the Newberry Library in 1969 and directed its Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography from 1974-80. From there he returned to Wisconsin, where he began the cartography project in 1981 and was named professor of geography. He took emeritus status in 2002 and continued to co-edit the project.
