GIS software provides the functions and tools needed to store, analyze, and display information about places. For more information about how GIS software works and the different types available, visit What GIS Software Does on GIS.com. Following are sources of free and low–cost software.

ArcExplorer
A free data viewer from ESRI that performs some basic GIS functions. You can use your own data with ArcExplorer or browse data over the Web.

Directions Magazine Free GIS Tools
This search engine finds tools and scripts that assist current users of GIS. Select the Viewers link for free data viewing and mapping tools.

FreeGIS.org
In addition to links to free software, the site provides a FreeGIS Tutorial showing the possibilities of solving tasks around GIS, surveying, and remote sensing by using free software under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation.

GeoCommunity
A variety of tools and free downloads are available for current and new GIS users.
