2009-2010 MyCOE / SERVIR Biodiversity Initiative in AfricaMyCOE / SERVIR is supporting interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral teams of university students and their mentors to learn to apply geographic techniques for research on protected areas, threatened species, and related topics in Africa. Biodiversity Initiative in Central AmericaThe MyCOE partnership announces a new initiative building upon our current work and partnership with USAID, USGS, ESRI and other public/private partners and focusing attention local capacity to use geography and geographic technologies for biodiversity initiatives in Central America. Supporting Basic Math & Science Education in the Muslim WorldThe MyCOE partnership is pleased to announce a new initiative to promote the use of Geography and GIS to support basic math and science education in the Muslim World. Working in conjunction with geographers from the Middle East and from South Asia, with ESRI, the US State Department, and other partners, the AAG will conduct a set of activities that will improve the availability of innovative educational resources and experiences for K-12 teachers in the Muslim World. • MyCOE Teacher Professional Development Workshop in Davao City, Philippines Geography and Education in ChileThe University of La Serena, Chile, has begun organizing a yearly research project competition as part of the GeoElqui Program. The competition, now in its third year, follows the MyCOE model, in which local students use geographic technologies to address an environmental issue. Learn more here.
MyCOE Pagadian Teacher Professional Development Workshop in the PhilippinesThe MyCOE Pagadian Teacher Professional Development Workshop was spearheaded by the Biosphereans' Science Club of Zamboanga del Sur National High School-San Pedro Annex, Pagadian City, Philippines. Based on the MyCOE model, the workshop gave high school mathematics and science teachers the opportunity to learn about geographic technologies for basic math and science using hands-on learning strategies. MyCOE Constellations: Linking Research, Education, and Extension OutreachMyCOE brought together constellations of undergraduate students, faculty, and extension personnel in land grant and sea grant universities to jointly conduct community-based projects using geographic tools and technologies for sustainable development. The objective of creating and supporting these nodes of collaboration was to improve linkages among research, education, and extension outreach related to critical sustainability topics and USDA-CSREES National Emphasis Areas, in particular natural resources, forestry, environment, watershed management, conservation, agricultural systems, rural development, technology and land use issues. Geographic Learningships in the US Gulf and Greater Caribbean RegionA special learning experience that provides the opportunity to gain valuable workforce experience, use geographic knowledge and tools, and engage with local communities on real-world sustainable development issues. The Digital Bus and Geography AdventuresMyCOE Friends in the Pacific have teamed up to mobilize geographic learning with the Digital Bus Project. A teacher's workshop led to the creation of a new online adventure Online Youth Project GalleryHave you conducted a local sustainable development project? Submit your work to our online gallery . Projects will be reviewed for relevance and posted for public viewing. Select projects may be eligible to receive special recognition." UNDESD Kickoff Celebration 2005To celebrate the start of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, MyCOE held a student contest. "Youth from middle school, secondary school, and university levels from around the world submitted maps and descriptions of the local projects on sustainable development issues which they conducted using MyCOE resources. WSSD Celebration 2002To celebrate the World Summit for Sustainable Development, the MyCOE partnership was born with a global contest for student projects using geographic tools and concepts.
