Supporting Basic Math & Science Education in the Muslim World

Teacher Training Workshop
Call for Applications

An innovative combination of geographic education and technology with an inquiry-driven, hands-on teaching method involving youth with local projects

  • improves teacher training and curriculum content
  • promotes positive community involvement and builds a community ethic
  • develops technology skills to increase future employment options for youth and women to support economic development

Why Geography?

Geography and GIS education has been shown to improve attitudes toward technology and science, increase performance in mathematics skills and increase the level of comfort in teaching mathematics among educators.

Workshop Details

Participants will receive modest travel support to attend a one-week workshop in Tunis, November 5-10, 2007, where they will learn more about using geographic technologies and hands-on learning strategies. They will also receive training materials and software, curriculum resources in Arabic, and networking with mentors to apply what they learn in their own classrooms.

How can I participate?

The MyCOE program invites teachers from the North African and Middle East region to apply to attend a workshop to be held in Tunis, Tunisia to learn more about using geographic technologies and concepts in the classroom and practice active pedagogical strategies. If interested, please send the following to Dr. Patricia Solis (psolis@aag.org):

  • A letter of interest explaining why you wish to be considered for the workshop and what you plan to do with what you will learn;
  • A brief biographical paragraph or resume outlining your background and experience;
  • Full contact information, including formal name, title, affiliation, address, telephone, and email.

Applications received before August 17, 2007 will receive priority consideration. Selected participants will be notified before the end of September to prepare for attending the November workshop in Tunis.
