Controlling the Use of Charcoal for Cooking in Haiti Leyla Tardieu
Geographic focus: Haiti Date completed: 2002 In Haiti, intensive production of charcoal has been a principal cause of deforestation. Forested land, which once covered much of the county’s territory, now represents only 2 percent of total land area. Leyla Tardieu, a student from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, mapped the growth of charcoal producing regions between 1980 and 1990, and demonstrated that production tends to be concentrated in mountainous areas. Her recommendations to address the problems associated with intensive production of charcoal included use of alternative energy sources such as propane or kerosene, adoption of improved stoves that use less coal, and reforestation.
