Sustainable Water Resource Development in
Ujjal Park, Kolkata, India

Shinjan Sengupta

Geographic focus: India / Ujjal Park, Kolkata

Date completed: 2002

Continual withdrawal of groundwater in Ujjal Park has resulted in steep depletion of the underground repository both by measure of quantity and quality. Shinjan Sengupta, a student from Kolkata, India, created maps of land use and water level change over time to better assess the problem. Shinjan proposed collecting rainwater and drawing water from a nearby reservoir as possible ways to reduce pressure on the Ujjal Park groundwater reserve.
