Effects of Urbanization on Water Resource Use and Quality

Ssekitto Rashid and Wasubire Julius

Geographic focus: Uganda / Murchison Bay of Lake Victoria

Date completed: 2002

The Murchison Bay of Lake Victoria is an important source of water for the nearby city of Kampala. Ssekitto Rashid and Wasubire Julius, two local university students, studied the environmental effects of rapid urbanization within the Murchison Bay drainage basin. They created several maps showing changes in land use to better understand the underlying causes of contamination. To mitigate the effects of urbanization on their region’s natural environment, Ssekitto and Wasubire recommended establishment of buffer zones around the Bay, relocation of certain settlements in ecologically fragile areas, and initiation of solid waste management measures.
