Geography of the Area

Guillaume Montcho

Geographic focus: Benin / Dan region

Date completed: 2002

Benin’s population has been growing at a high rate and because farmers represent 80% of this population, the country’s natural environment has come under heavy pressure from human activities. Guillaume Montcho, a student from Benin, interpreted aerial photographs and used GIS software to create land use/land cover maps of the Dan region in Benin for the period between 1949 and 1995. These maps show how forested land first gave way to savanna, then to farms. Guillaume proposed that data be made available to create an updated map of the region.
