Mangrove Conservation on Pulau Ubin, Singapore

Tan Chor Kiang, Wu Cheng Yuan and Lin An Rong

Geographic focus: Singapore / island of Pulau Ubin

Date completed: 2002

Mangroves are among the relatively few flora species that thrive in harsh coastal environments and they provide excellent habitat for a diverse range of organisms. A team of students from the Raffles Institute in Singapore evaluated the potential for conserving mangroves surrounding Pulau Ubin, a small island in northeastern Singapore. They discussed threats to the mangroves and recent conservation efforts, and they used a map to show mangrove distribution. The team then identified areas where restoration would be most productive.
