Bangladesh Industrial Pollution (Sources and Impacts) Estimating System (BIPES)

Shamim Hasan

Geographic focus: Bangladesh

Date completed: 2002

Environmental regulators in developing countries often lack the necessary information to set priorities, strategies, and action plans. Shamim Hasan, a student at Jhangirnagar University, in Bangladesh, studied the relationship between industrialization and environmental contamination at the national level. Shamim created a series of maps showing pollution load distribution across districts in Bangladesh. Shamim recommended that government officials identify the impacts of industrial pollution on human health, fish production, agriculture and wetlands.
