Community Based Approach to Sustainable Tourism

Alhassan Amin

Geographic focus: Ghana / Northern region of Ghana

Date completed: 2002

Tourism has the potential to transform local economies and indirectly preserve threatened species, but must be planned guided according to a regional model. Alhassan Amin, a student from Ghana, used GIS technologies to help analyze patterns and relationships related to tourism in the northern region of his country. He recommended that policy makers adopt a similar approach to planning and regulating tourism. Alhassan also proposed that planners consult local communities when carrying out tourism-related projects.
