Suggested Project Themes

Any project that uses geographic methods or analysis and maps to address sustainable development issues is eligible. Sustainable development issues are defined broadly as any issues that concern the maintenance or improvement of life and the means to support it for the long term. Using geographic tools, maps, and methods to emphasize change over time in a place or community is one way of addressing these issues.

Examples of sustainable development issues that might be addressed include, but are not limited to the current priority areas of the commission on sustainable development:

  • Water
  • Santitation
  • Human Settlement

Other topics may include:

  • Climate change
  • Environmental pollution
  • Food production
  • Forest management
  • Fresh water supply
  • Health and disease
  • Urbanization

Additional examples include the Agenda 21 list of 21 areas of focus developed at the Rio Conference on the Environment in 1992.
