4-H & Youth Program FAQs
How Many Projects May Be Submitted? Is There a Maximum? Individual students or student teams may submit as many unique projects as they like. Each submitted project must contain at least one map and a two- or three-page written description of the project. See the project guidelines and requirements for more details. Are There Limits to the Size of a Project Team? No, there is no limit to the number of students in any one team. Individual students or teams of any size may submit a project. You or your local team may even want to join forces with students in another region or country to submit a joint project. Is There an Age Requirement for Participation? Youth in the age groups corresponding to middle school, secondary school, college or undergraduate university level may participate in the My Community, Our Earth program. May Teams in Different Areas Cooperate on the Same Project? Members from different regions of the world may coordinate on the same project comparing their communities. A joint project must be submitted as a single entry and list all participants. What Resources Are Available to Help Project Teams? Click here for your special online 4-H & Youth Program Online Resource Kit The guide to information about data, software, and other resources offers tips for project teams. Mentors can also be a valuable source of guidance and information. A complete list of available mentors is included in the resource kit, or you may search online to find a mentor. How Can Participants Request a Mentor? You may search online to find a mentor and his or her e-mail address. Will Students Be Paired With Mentors From the Same Region? If you are seeking hands-on assistance, you may want to find a mentor in your region. Or you may want to seek a mentor with expertise in your special area of interest. Many mentors can provide guidance, assistance, and insight into their area of expertise by phone, mail, or e-mail. What Are the Requirements to Become a Mentor? There are no special requirements to volunteer as a mentorjust an interest in helping students with a sustainable development-themed geography or GIS project. Educators, instructors, and working professionals with expertise in geography, sustainable development, and GIS are encouraged to volunteer to become a mentor. When Are Projects Due?
