Urban Development in Wet Lands Southern Kolkata
South 24 Paraganas, West Bengal, India

Anghita Chakrabor

Geographic focus: India / West Bengal

Date completed: 2002

Urban development in wetland areas along the Hoogly (Ganges River) threatens the biodiversity of the region. Anghita Chakrabor, a student from West Bengal, India, created a series of maps to document human encroachment in fragile and biologically valuable ecosystems. To counter this threat, Anghita recommends halting drainage of wetlands immediately, shifting construction of the Metro Railway to the southern side of the Tally Nala, and installing heavy duty pumps to move rainwater from the low lying area to lower course of Tally Nala.
