Students of Wolmer’s Girls School
Geographic focus: Jamaica / Kingston
Date completed: 2005
Urbanization has had a profound influence on Jamaican society. Students from Wolmer’s High School for Girls studied the problem of street children in Kingston by mapping distribution of this population and collecting demographic information. They also analyzed data from surveys and assess programs designed to address the problem. From the results of their research and analyses, the students made several recommendations, including: a public education campaign using radio and television, establishment of self-help programs for parents of street children, and institution of a “Street Children Day” to draw attention to the issue.
