Poverty and Child Abuse Counts

Imam Xierali

Geographic focus: USA / Cincinnati and northern Kentucky region

Date completed: 2002

Concentration of poverty poses risk to children and evidence suggests that it is associated with child abuse. Imam Xierali, a student at the University of Cincinnati, mapped the distribution of poverty and incidents of child abuse to test the correlation. In Iman’s maps the two sources of data are interpolated by census tract centroids with kriging method, which spatially demonstrate that areas with poverty concentration tend to have higher child abuse counts.
