Groundwater Vulnerability Assessment
Geographic focus: Ecuador / Quito
Date completed: 2002
Assessing groundwater vulnerability allows planners to manage and protect a city’s water supply, and accurate measurements are crucial for a city such as Quito, Ecuador, whose glacier-fed water supply faces potential major disruptions as a result of climate change. Xavier Coello, a student at the National Polytechnic University of Ecuador, used mathematical models and GIS software to evaluate vulnerability of the Northern Aquifer of Quito. To complement his research, he recommended that a risk map for the Quito Northern Aquifer be developed.
