Geographic focus: Brazil / State of São Paulo

Date completed: 2002

Problems in Brazil’s energy distribution network stem in part from a lack of planning by decision-makers, and unless proactive policies emerge, the situation may get worse. In carrying out much needed analyses of energy resources, demands, and infrastructure, GIS offers a valuable means of organizing and interpreting data. A team from the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo used GIS to evaluate energy infrastructure in a number of administrative units within the State of São Paulo. They proposed that geographic technologies be used more in planning energy distribution networks. Specifically, they recommended that governments compile a database for planners to use when creating maps to help design such networks.
