The Edwards Aquifer and a Look at Nitrates

Elizabeth Richardson

Geographic focus: USA / Texas, the Edwards Aquifer

Date completed: 2002

The Edwards Aquifer is the main water supply for a seven county area in the state of Texas, USA, which includes the city of San Antonio, the seventh largest city in America. Elizabeth Richardson, a local student, carried out a project that attempted to determine the levels of herbicides, pesticides and nitrates in the Edwards Aquifer. She used ARCVIEW 3.2 to import and analyze maps and data. Elizabeth’s preliminary results indicated that industrial farming with excessive nitrates may be polluting the Edwards Aquifer.  She recommended that more research be carried out to determine the extent of nitrate contamination. She also recommended that farmers begin to examine the benefits of organic farming.
