Zulherman M. Sosi and Susilawati Sulaiman

Geographic focus: Malaysia / City of Kuala Lumpur

Date completed: 2002

GIS-based modeling of flood zones in urban areas can serve as a useful tool for preventing and responding to these natural disasters. Zulherman M. Sosi and Susilawati Sulaiman, two students at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of the Technology University of Malaysia, explored the potential for using GIS to create flood risk models for the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They recommended that geographic analyses be used to guide future urban development so that human induced disasters might be avoided.
