Land Use Dynamics Assessment of Amazon Forest Deforestation and its Influence on Water Quality in Central Rondônia - Brazil

Silvio Frosini de Barros Ferraz

Date completed: 2002

The Amazon rainforest, one of the most ecologically important regions of the world, faces severe deforestation threats from encroaching settlements. Silvio Frosini de Barros Ferraz, a doctoral student at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, studied patterns of deforestation in a region of the Amazon to help understand associated effects on water quality. He used landsat imagery between 1985 and 1999 to demonstrate the shift from mature forest to pasture in central Rondônia, a state in northwestern Brazil. He proposed that further studies investigate the relationship between land use and water quality.
