Assistant Professor of Forest Ecosystem Ecology, University of Alaska Southeast
The Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Forest Ecosystem Ecology, with a focus on the dynamics, processes and interactions in forested ecosystems.
Candidates who can address aspects of applied forestry and/or forest management in their research and teaching are preferred. The position will support undergraduate degree programs in Environmental Science, Geography, and Biology. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate level courses in the forest-ecosystem sciences, plant ecology, and natural resource management as well as upper division courses and seminars in the candidate's area of expertise.
Candidates should have prior research experience and the capacity to establish a program of externally funded research, with an expectation that they will involve undergraduate students in their research.
The successful candidate will be involved in EPSCoR research activities at UAS focused on evaluating the physical and biological function and ecosystem services associated with the coastal temperate rainforests of southeast Alaska. Also, the successful candidate is expected to work collaboratively across disciplines within the Department of Natural Sciences. Opportunities exist to engage with regional organizations such as the Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center (http://acrc.alaska.edu) and the U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station (http://www.fs.fed.us/pnw/) that complements the successful candidate's research program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a full-time (12 month), tenure-accruing position in the School of Forest Resources and Conservation with responsibilities in teaching (60% -College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) and research (40% - Florida Agricultural Experiment Station). The selected applicant is expected to develop a successful externally funded research program in the general area of geospatial sciences, with an emphasis on mapping and spatial analysis of natural resources. The candidate is expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, advise students, recruit and supervise graduate students, engage in service activities, and be an active team member within the Geomatics Program. Teaching responsibilities will include two or three undergraduate courses (such as Geodesy and Route Geometrics) as well as at least one graduate course in the research area of the candidate. These courses may be face-to-face and/or online as part of a growing distance education program. The Program is especially interested in candidates who can enhance its capability in hydrographic surveying (including benthic mapping) to address the many coastal challenges faced by Florida. QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Ph.D. (foreign equivalent acceptable) in a geomatics-related discipline (e.g., surveying, mapping, civil engineering, geography) with a solid grounding in geomatics (e.g., geodesy, cadastral studies, photogrammetry, remote sensing, land surveying). Experience in work associated with natural resources and/or aquatic systems is desired. It is envisaged that the candidate will work closely with other programs within SFRC, such as Fisheries and Aquatic sciences (FAS) and Forest Resources and Conservation. Candidates should have excellent written and oral communication skills and a demonstrated interest in collaborating with colleagues within academia, as well as professionals outside the university setting. Dedication to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and service, and evidence of scholarly achievement are required. OTHER INFORMATION: The Geomatics Program in the School of Forest Resources and Conservation is ABET accredited and is one of the few programs in the U.S. that offers Geomatics-related degrees at the Master’s and Ph.D. levels. The program enjoys tremendous support from the Florida Surveying and Mapping Society in terms of monetary donations, advice and guidance, and scholarships.
Florida is a high growth state having the corresponding requirements for land development and environmental protection. There is an ever increasing need for Geomatics professionals who can meet the challenges associated with that growth.

Postdoctoral Associate, Miami, FL. The Department of Geography and Regional Studies at the University of Miami has an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Associate to work under the direction of Dr. Douglas Fuller. The postdoc will collaborate with scientists from University of Miami (UM) and various research institutes and universities based in the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region. He/she will apply remote sensing and GIS techniques to monitor and model regional environmental change related to irrigation practices and other land surface changes in MENA that influence disease vectors. Primary responsibilities will involve developing study designs, analyzing time series of vegetation indices derived from satellite data sets, writing scientific papers, and collaborating on ecological modeling studies. Duties include: Compile and analyze multitemporal and multi-resolution satellite data sets; Integrate data derived from GIS and remote sensing with spatial-ecological models; Develop, maintain, edit, and document project databases and analyze data using statistical methods; Prepare results for peer-reviewed publications, co-author peer-reviewed papers, as well as prepare manuscripts as first author.
Minimum qualifications include a PhD in Geography, Ecology or other related fields. Proficiency in optical remote sensing, knowledge of ecological principles and theory. Familiarity with parasitology, and epidemiology of tropical environments considered a plus. Proficiency with study designs, data management, and advanced statistical methods. The Center for Watershed Science (CWS) is seeking a Sediment Transport Scientist to focus on sediment transport processes in Upper Midwest streams affecting agriculture, ecosystems, water supply, and navigation. The CWS has been at the forefront generating historical and spatial scientific data, investigating and understanding watershed processes, and providing state-of-the-art scientific and engineering analyses to policymakers, planners, and resource managers in the State of Illinois and beyond.
This position will investigate sediment transport issues related to the watershed processes of erosion, sedimentation, and stream restoration through the use of geomorphic field investigations, compilation and computation of hydraulic and sediment data, sediment transport and hydraulic models, and multi-disciplinary collaborations.
Duties and Responsibilities: The scientist will conduct investigations on erosion, sediment transport, sedimentation and geomorphic processes and modeling of riverine systems; participate and contribute to field data collection and data analyses. Scientist will interact with stakeholders, as well as local and state resource managers. Develop and manage research proposals and projects. Prepare technical reports and papers. Advance the understanding of current approaches to sediment and hydraulic modeling and fluvial geomorphology. And collaborate with ISWS researchers on different projects.
Required Education and Experience: Master’s degree required, Ph.D. preferred in Civil/Environmental/Agricultural Engineering or related earth sciences field. Successful candidate will have relevant work experience in sediment transport and hydrologic/hydraulic modeling and field-based geomorphic investigations.

Humphrey Visiting Professorship. The Humphrey Professorship was established in 1968 to strengthen international education at Macalester by bringing to the campus distinguished individuals with international expertise. Six Graduate Positions in Climate Research at the University of Nevada, Reno Geography Department
The new Interdisciplinary Climate Research Lab in the Department of Geography at the University of Nevada, Reno, led by Dr. Douglas Boyle and Dr. Scott Bassett, has six funded research fellowships for Doctoral students interested in pursuing multi-disciplinary climate research with us and our collaborators at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, University of Maine, the University of Arizona, and University of Texas at Austin.

The positions, which are funded through the Nevada State Climate Office (NSCO) and a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), begin in August 2013 and are for four years with half-time monthly salary support of $1,800 during the academic year and the possibility of full-time support during the summer (combined up to $27,000/year).
