The AAG Journals Exchange Program

The AAG Journals Exchange Program connects members who wish to donate journals and other publications with libraries, university departments, and individuals in need of such materials for their collections.

Donations of hard copies of AAG publications, including the Annals of the Association of American Geographers and the Professional Geographer, can improve access to academic resources for students and faculty who need them. Such donations can also assist libraries of geography departments overseas build their collections, where online access may be limited or hard copies are difficult to find. Contributions of such materials are greatly appreciated by those who receive them.  Donors, who often include many retiring geographers, also appreciate the opportunity to have their journals placed in locations where they will be used to advance geographic education and research.

Professor Ana Garcia examines donated geography journals in the library of the Centro de Investigación y Estudios Avanzados in Mérida, México. With logistical and shipping help from Marla Emery, PhD, Research Geographer at USDA, the library received a 50-year archive of the Annals.

Receiving geography books and journals in Panama: Dr. Mario Julio De León, chair of the Department of Geography at the University of Panama; Patricia Solís, Director of Research and Outreach at the AAG; and Noris Martínez, geography student at the University of Panama and AAG intern.

If you wish to donate journals or other geography materials overseas, the AAG can help coordinate a shipment. Due to high cost of sending materials overseas, the AAG accepts funds to support transportation costs and sometimes works in partnership with reputable book donation organizations to arrange for delivery. In some cases, the AAG may be able to direct the shipment to a specific country, or even a particular recipient institution.

If you are interested in participating in the AAG Journal Exchange program, please login and subscribe to the AAG Journal Exchange forum through “My Communities”. You will be redirected to a public exchange where you can both post requests for materials and search other postings for donation offers, or post your list of journals available for donation.

To discuss a specific materials donation or to make a donation to cover transportation costs for overseas shipping, please contact Patricia Solís or Matt Hamilton.
