In 2006, the Association of American Geographers (AAG) and the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) signed a memorandum of understanding, an act which formally acknowledged the two organizations' shared interests and desire to work together to promote geography throughout the Americas.
PAIGH is a technical and scientific body of the Organization of American States specializing in the areas of cartography, geography, history and geophysics. For 80 years, the organization has promoted collaboration among researchers throughout the Americas by sponsoring conferences, publishing journals and organizing workshops.
The AAG and PAIGH have collaborated in a number of activities, including:
- Co-sponsoring a panel session entitled "Exploring International Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration in the Americas"
- Joint presentations at an international conference
on geographic collaboration in education
and research in La
Serena, Chile, May 23-25, 2007. Partners included the Universidad
de La Serena and Texas State
University.
- Co-sponsoring a session highlighting cooperation throughout the Americas at the 2007 AAG
Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
- Participation in a panel session entitled "Geography in the Americas: Resources for Supporting International Collaboration" to be held at the 2009 AAG Annual Meeting in Las Vegas.
