AFRICAN REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY ORGANIZATIONS

African Association of Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE)
This professional association encourages the development and practice of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) as well as products of these geo-information technologies in their respective areas of operation.

African Development Information Services (AfDevInfo)
AfDevInfo tracks the mechanics of political and economic development across Sub Saharan Africa. This commercial, not-for-profit enterprise draws together a diverse range of publicly available data and presents it as an accessible and ever expanding online database.

Africa Forum on Rural Development (AFORD)
The Africa Forum on Rural Development (AFORD) connects experts working with programs in agriculture or rural development based in Africa, including practitioners, decision makers and advisors from the public and private sectors.

African Geo Information Research Network (AGIRN)
AGIRN provides the African geo-information research community the means to publish and access high quality work, share in geo-information knowledge and engage in discussion through a widely accessible web based medium.

African Geodetic Reference Frame (AFREF)
AFREF works to create a fundamental basis for national and regional three-dimensional reference networks.  When fully implemented, it will consist of a network of continuous permanent GPS stations such that a user anywhere in Africa would have free access to GPS data and products and would be at most 1000 km from such stations.

Center for Geographic Information Systems (CGIS-NUR)
The CGIS-NUR serves as a regional outreach center in the fields of geographic information systems and remote sensing, and encourages applications of these technologies that focus on research for environment and sustainable development to address the issue of poverty reduction.

EIS Africa
This network of professionals and organizations collaborates to generate, manage, disseminate and use geo-spatial and environmental information to enrich policy debate and support decision-making for the well-being of African people.

European – South African Science and Technology Advancement Programme (EASTAP)
ESASTAP promotes the participation of South African researchers in the EU Framework Programme. ESASTAP is planning to embark on FP7 information sessions to SMEs in all provinces to inform them about FP7 and opportunities offered by the programme.

IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC)
ICPAC serves 24 countries in the eastern and southern African sub-region under the auspices of the WMO and UNDP. The major goals of ICPAC include improved and enhanced sub-regional and national capacities to providing climate information, prediction products and services, early warning, and related applications, as a contribution to sustainable development in the IGAD Sub-Region.

International Water Management Institute (IWMI)
In Africa, IWMI conducts research in three sub-regions: the Nile Basin and East Africa, West Africa and Southern Africa. IWMI's research in the region aims at improved water management and poverty alleviation focusing on six priority areas: water resources management; small scale land and water management interventions; improved irrigation management; multiple water use and development systems; achieving the MDGs on sanitation while making an asset out of wastewater; sustainable use of wetlands for improved livelihoods.

Nile Basin Initiative (NBI)
The NBI is a partnership initiated by the riparian states of the Nile River. Its main objectives are to develop the Nile Basin water resources in a sustainable and equitable way to ensure prosperity, security, and peace for all its peoples; to ensure efficient water management and the optimal use of the resources; to ensure cooperation and joint action between the riparian countries, seeking win-win gains; to target poverty eradication and promote economic integration; to ensure that the program results in a move from planning to action.

Observatoire Satellital des Forêts d'Afrique Centrale (OSFAC)
(Central African Network of the Global Observation of Forests and Land Cover Dynamics)

OSFAC is a coordinated international initiative that provides ongoing space-based and in-situ observations of forests and other vegetation cover of Central African countries. These data are used to promote sustainable management of terrestrial resources and to obtain an accurate, reliable, quantitative understanding of the terrestrial carbon budget.

Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD)
RCMRD provides technical services, advisory services and training in numerous fields of surveying and mapping. The organization specializes in photogrammetry, photo-interpretation, first order geodesy, remote sensing, and calibration and maintenance of surveying and mapping equipment.

Regional Centre for Training in Aerospace Surveys (RECTAS)
RECTAS works with regional governments and mapping organizations to disseminate information in the field of geo-informatics through seminars, workshops, courses. RECTAS also provides advisory services to these organizations.

Southern African Development Community (SADC)
The SADC is a partnership of Southern African nations that has identified poverty eradication as the overarching priority in its integration agenda. The SADC focuses on the broad goals of achieving development and economic growth, alleviation of poverty, enhancement of the standard and quality of live of the people of Southern Africa and support for the socially disadvantaged groups through regional integration.

Southern African Regional Poverty Network (SARPN)
SARPN is a non-profit organization that promotes debate and knowledge sharing on poverty reduction processes and experiences in Southern Africa. SARPN aims to contribute towards effective reduction of poverty in the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) through creating platforms for effective pro-poor policy, strategy and practice.

University Network for Disaster Risk Reduction in Africa (UNEDRA) 
UNEDRA's main aim is to forge interaction amongst universities in Africa with interest in teaching on disaster risk reduction, through information sharing, capacity building and collaborative research.
