Social Justice, Media, and Human Rights

As recent events have shown, media coverage and the use of social media and technology can have substantial impacts upon social justice movements and human rights abuses around the world, as well as our geographical perspective on them. These issues are of great interest and importance to geographers, political scientists, journalists, sociologists, legal scholars, and others, and will be focused on in this track.

This special track will begin Sunday morning with paper sessions running in two concurrent rooms through Monday evening. A special panel session on the topic of Social Justice, Media, and Human Rights featuring Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times and Salil Shetty of Amnesty International will take place at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 28. The AAG Atlas Award Ceremony honoring Mary Robinson will be held at 7:00 pm on Saturday, February 25, and should be of special interest to those attending other sessions in this track.

Sessions in this track include: 2605, 3106, 3205, 3206, 3405, 3406, 3505, 3506, 3605, 3606, 4104, 4105, 4204, 4205, 4404, 4405, 4504, 4505, 4604, 4605, and 5231.
