Jobs in Geography Ads

The Association of American Geographers (AAG) publishes classified job ads knows as “Jobs in Geography” (JIG) in both the AAG Newsletter and online at www.aag.org. Ads run for two months (except for display ads, which run on a per-month basis). Explanations of costs and guidelines for submitting a JIG for publication are provided below.

The AAG Newsletter is published monthly except for July-August, which appears as a single issue. Current circulation is approximately 10,000. Each JIG runs for two consecutive issues unless a stated deadline permits only one listing. Announcements may be removed from the AAG website following the expiration of a stated deadline.

Submission deadline for the AAG Newsletter is the first day of the month previous. For example: the deadline is October 1 for the November issue. The combined July-August issue has a slightly later deadline, June 10. Please keep these deadlines in mind when preparing your ad for submission.

Although the lead time required for print ads is significant, job ads can usually be posted online within a few days. The JIGs online are updated weekly. All job ads received will be processed and posted within seven working days. The Jobs in Geography portion of the AAG website is available to members only and is one of our most popular online features.

Cost

Cost for publishing a JIG is $1.25 per word with a minimum charge of $150 (for line ads). Standard run time is two months. Announcements run for two consecutive issues unless a stated deadline permits only one listing.

Please note that customers may request that a job ad run for one month only, or in only one of the two available venues (print only or online only). However, there are no discounts for these special requests.

You may also place a display ad (rates are listed below) which must be submitted as a PDF. Display ads are ads that are designed by the customer and submitted as a single image. Cost is based on the ad’s dimensions, not on a per-word basis. The text of the display ad must also be submitted as a separate Word document to assure its timely posting to the website. Note that rates for display ads are for one month only.

Disclaimer

The AAG claims no responsibility for editing advertisements. The AAG assumes that ads submitted for publication have been fact-checked and edited for grammatical and other errors by the advertiser. The AAG claims no responsibility for errors made in processing requests when ads are not submitted in the proper format. Employers should notify the Newsletter Editor to cancel a listing once the position is filled. The Editor reserves the right to edit announcements to conform to established format. All ads must be in English.

Classified Line Ads

A simple text-only ad is called a line ad. Job ads are run for two months in the AAG Newsletter and are posted on the AAG website (members-only portion) until the end of the two-month print run. The online version is posted soon after receiving the request and usually much sooner than the printed Newsletter reaches its destination. JIGs online are updated weekly.

Special Requests

An advertiser may request that an ad run in-print only, online only, or for one month only, but the price is the same. There are no discounts for special requests. Requests for longer run times are simply pro-rated. Please make special requests at the time of submission.

To Place a JIG

Send an email to the newsletter editor at: jketchum@aag.org.
Please make sure to edit and read your ad carefully before you submit it.
Please do not fax your order to the AAG.

Format

Please submit line ads as a Word document (or if a display ad, as a PDF). With all line ads, place the state and city in ALL CAPS and bold at the top of your ad like this:
MARYLAND, SPRINGFIELD. Follow this heading with the text of your advertisement.

Billing Address

We will send you an invoice during the first month of printed publication. Please include the appropriate billing address when you submit your ad. Advertisers choosing online-only publication will receive their invoice by email as a PDF. NOTE: the lack of  a billing address at the time of submission may prevent the processing of your ad in a timely manner -- please include your billing address when submitting your ad.

Phone Payments by Credit Card

Those paying by credit card often like to do so by telephone. Please wait until you receive your invoice before calling the AAG with your payment. The AAG does not accept payment for JIGs until invoices have been processed and delivered to the customer. Payments may be made by phone by calling (202) 234-1450. Ask for our accounting department at extension 124.

Affirmative Action Notice

The AAG Affirmative Action Committee requires those listing jobs to send to the JIG Editor the name, academic degree, sex, and rank of each person appointed as a result of an announcement in JIG. A response form will be mailed to you along with your invoice. Please return it to the AAG once your job search has concluded. The AAG will publish announcements of new hires in the "new appointments" section of the AAG Newsletter.
