Background

The workshop “Space Technology and Geoinformation for Sustainable Development” is organized and funded by a public-private partnership that includes the U.S. Department of State, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Association of American Geographers (AAG), Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), Trimble Navigation, Ltd., and the Egyptian National Authority for Remote Sensing and Space Sciences (NARSS).

The funding provided by the Department of State is from the U.S.-Egypt Joint Science and Technology Fund. The Joint Fund was established under the U.S-Egypt Science and Technology Cooperative Agreement first signed in 1995, and renewed in 2001 and 2005, by the United States and the Arab Republic of Egypt. Approximately USD $4million per year is equally distributed between Egyptian and American Scientists working together on joint Fund activities.

The main goals of the Fund are to:

  • Strengthen the scientific and technological capacity of both countries
  • Broaden and expand relations between the scientific and technical communities
  • Promote scientific and technological cooperation in areas of mutual benefit for peaceful purposes.

The Joint Fund support for research and development cooperation takes the form of:

  • Dual-Cooperator Research Grants
  • Workshop Grants
  • Junior Scientist Development Visit Grants
