AAG and EIS-AFRICA Collaboration
To foster research collaboration, educational exchange, and cross cultural understanding between American geographers and their colleagues from African nations, the AAG has recently established collaborative programs with a leading African regional geography, GIS, and environmental science organization, EIS-AFRICA.
EIS-AFRICA, headquartered in Pretoria, South Africa, is recognized as a leader in the development of African capacity to generate, manage, disseminate, and use geospatial, earth observation, and environmental data. It also is the manager of the biennial AFRICA-GIS Conference, the premier geo-information event in Africa.
Development of Fundamental Geospatial Datasets in Africa
The AAG and EIS-AFRICA formally began working together in August 2008 after the approval of a U.S. Department of State-funded grant to carry out a collaborative project that supports sustainable development in Africa. One objective of the project is to fill gaps in fundamental geospatial data at a continent-wide level. Another objective is to strengthen local capacity in African universities, NGOs, and governmental agencies to foster sustainable development.
Reciprocal Membership Program
To enrich the professional experience of AAG and EIS-AFRICA members alike, each organization has made it easier for its members to join the other. AAG members are eligible to join EIS-AFRICA for $20, either when they renew their AAG membership or at any time by contacting the AAG. Members of EIS-AFRICA who wish to join the AAG may do so by contacting staff of that organization.
