PhD in Integrating Socio-Environmental Systems Using Community-Based Participatory Research Approaches

The Department of Environmental Studies/Graduate Program in Environmental Science is seeking an outstanding PhD student interested in basic and applied research at the intersection of urban green infrastructure and local civic engagement. The student will contribute to a research program aimed at building community capacity for health promotion in an impoverished area of Syracuse, NY, through the provision of ecosystems services. Field sites are vacant lots in which green infrastructure (GI) is implemented to mitigate water quality problems resulting from combined sewer overflows (CSOs). Students should expect to employ a community-based participatory research (CBPR) methodology applied within a coupled social-ecological conceptual framework linking human and ecological outcomes. The student will be expected to play an active part in all community-based collaborative research activities and project management.

She or he will be funded by an EPA grant to work with Drs. Elizabeth Vidon and Mary Collins at SUNY-ESF. She or he will receive three years of Research Assistantship support and one year of a teaching assistantship in addition to developing a project-related dissertation in collaboration with Drs. Vidon and Collins. Funding covers tuition, benefits and stipend.

Start date: Fall of 2017

• Design and conduct original, empirical research at the intersection of urban green infrastructure and local civic engagement using CBPR techniques.
• Co-author 1 manuscript every two years with Drs. Vidon and Collins.
• Follow departmental guidelines to meet graduation requirements in about 4 years
• Already have a completed master’s degree in relevant field
