NSF Appoints Daniel Hammel as Program Director for Geography and Spatial Sciences

Daniel Hammel has been appointed to serve as a program director for geography and spatial sciences (GSS) at the National Science Foundation, succeeding outgoing GSS Program Director Antoinette WinklerPrins, who is the new director of environmental studies programs at Johns Hopkins University. Hammel returns to the NSF after serving as a geography program director in 2007 and 2008. He holds a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Minnesota. Specializating in urban geography, he is a faculty member in the department of geography and planning at the University of Toledo.
Hammel will work with Kelley Crews, who is serving her second year as a GSS program director while on leave from the department of geography and the environment at the University of Texas-Austin, and Thomas Baerwald, long-standing GSS program director and a senior science advisor in the division of behavioral and cognitive sciences.
