AAG Cyberinfrastructure Specialty Group Announces Winners of the Inaugural Robert Raskin Mashup Map Competition

Aaron Fraint of Hunter College – CUNY took first place in the AAG Cyberinfrastructure Specialty Group’s (CISG) inaugural Robert Raskin Mashup Map Competition. Fraint also receives $700 for his winning entry, “Subways in Your Walkshed,” a mashup map designed to allow New Yorkers to explore subway options within walking distance of a given place. His map is a great example of integrating web-based geocoding technology and spatial query functions with open data in New York City.

The Popular Vote Award and $200 cash prize went to Jie Zheng of Wuhan University, China, for the map titled, “Gun Crime and Unemployment.” This map provides a dynamic visualization tool to display the locations of gun crimes in different years. The tables also illustrate both the unemployment rate and the shooting accident casualty in different states.

Three other finalists include a student group from George Mason University (Zhenlong Li, Min Sun, Yunfeng Jiang, and Kai Liu), Nancy Milholland from University of South California, and a group from University of California Santa Barbara (Yingjie Hu, Grant McKenzie, and Song Gao).

Cyberinfrastructure has been taking an increasingly important role in providing a Web-based collaborative environment to enable effective discovery of geospatial knowledge. The purpose of this competition is to (1) promote research and awareness of web-based GIS and Mashup applications, (2) encourage spatial thinking and the development of geospatial cyberinfrastructure in colleges and universities, and (3) inspire curiosity about geographic patterns and web map representation for students and the broader public. We received 11 submissions from three countries after our announcement. Participants used commercial or open-source toolkit to develop mashup maps. These entries were judged by its originality, cartographic design, interface design, interoperability, and communication skills.
