AAG Congratulates Winners of My Community, Our Earth Rio+20 Competition

WASHINGTON, DC –– The Association of American Geographers is pleased to announce the winners of the My Community, Our Earth (MyCOE) Rio+20 Competition. The competition called for youth-led sustainable development projects to celebrate MyCOE's ten year anniversary as well as the UN Conference on Sustainable Development held in June.
The submitted projects were to focus on themes related to the Rio+20 Earth Summit. They included: Agriculture, Climate Change, Forests, Food Security, Green Economy, Hazards and Vulnerability and Youth Leadership.
In all, 15 winning projects were selected from 145 entries. One project was also selected by the most number of online votes to receive the Most Popular Award.
In addition to the youth-led projects, two high school teachers were recognized for their outstanding performance in connecting their high school classrooms via videoconferences to give their students the opportunity to interact with their international peers on the Rio+20 themes and their projects.

MyCOE (My Community Our Earth: Geographic Learning for Sustainable Development) is a U.S. Type II Public-Private Partnership established in 2001 in conjunction with the United Nations World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.
