Betty Simbeye
Geographic focus: Zambia / Lukasa
Date completed: 2002
Wetlands perform some key natural functions and provide a wealth of direct and indirect benefits to human societies. Betty Simbeye, geography student at the University of Zambia, used aerial photos to create a series of maps that reveal the spatial and temporal extent to which wetlands near the city of Lusaka have been changed due to human encroachment. Betty recommended increased protection of the wetlands to safeguard water supply for urban areas and agriculture.
