Geographic focus: Bulgaria / Sofia
Date completed: 2002
The growth of industry in Bulgaria has consumed large quantities of locally available building materials and produces an abundant waste stream, putting great pressure on the local environment. Delyana Delyanova Boyadzhieva, a student at the University of Architecture in Sofia, Bulgaria, discussed the merits and challenges of recycling discarded building materials in the city. Delyana proposed that recycling centers be established to process non-renewable building materials, such as precast concrete panels.
