The consequences of poverty extend beyond human suffering and often lead to environmental degradation and overexploitation of natural resources.  Norbert Agoinon, a local student created a series of maps of Savalou and described how poverty threatens a region’s natural environment. Norbert recommended that farmers adopt agricultural systems that are more appropriate to local environmental conditions.
