Beginning in the 1970s, industrialization and the growth of cities along the Fu-Nan River led to extensive pollution and silting. Xiaoli Chi, a student at Sichuan University, created maps of the urban areas surrounding the River and discussed how problems of contamination and water shortages. Recommendations included reforesting riparian zones, treating wastewater, and launching an environmental awareness campaign.
