Geographic technologies help students learn about geographic concepts using real life case studies. Anne Galantowicz, an educator in the United States, developed a teaching module—Sustainable Development in East Africa—to introduce secondary students to geographic information systems (GIS) by examining world development indicators as they apply to East Africa. The module exposes students to issues such as deforestation, global warming, water shortages, desertification, overpopulation, and pollution through case studies in the East African countries of Burundi, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
