Geographic focus: Zambia / Kafue River
Date completed: 2003
Discharge of fertilizers from farms and other chemicals from industries and settlements along the banks of the Kafue River in Zambia has caused significant environmental problems. Njira Mtonga, a geography student at the University of Zambia, carried out field surveys and used GIS analysis to study the relationship between agricultural runoff and the spread of water hyacinth, an invasive plant species.
