Geography education is critical to understanding the world’s complex spatial relationships, and GIS is a valuable tool for applying geographic concepts to real-life issues. Carlos Acosta, from Panama, reported on his school’s experiences establishing a GIS program. Students learned about cartography, photo interpretation, remote sensing and methods for analyzing maps. They also gained practice with equipment and using software to create maps. Carlos recommended that neighboring schools create similar programs.
