Development of Hydrographic Dataset for Turkey:
A First Study
Serkan Girgin
Geographic focus: Turkey / Kucuk Menderes River Basin
Date completed: 2002
A national hydrographic data set can be defined as a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that encodes information about naturally occurring and constructed bodies of water, paths through which water flows, and related entities. Serkan Girgin, a student from Ankara, Turkey, used GIS software to create a series of hydrographic models of the Kucuk Menderes River Basin, in western Turkey. Serkan proposed that the entire country be mapped in a similar format, to aid in environmental protection programs and to guide sustainable development.
