Deforestation in Northern Areas of Pakistan
Jawad Akram
Geographic focus: Pakistan / Northern Areas
Date completed: 2002
Deforestation is a global environment concern, but the underlying processes vary across regions and countries. In Pakistan the threat to forests and biodiversity does not come primarily from local farmers, but from unsustainable commercial logging. Jawad Akram, a Pakistani student, used an actor-oriented approach to focus on deforestation in Gilgit Agency in the Northern parts of Pakistan. Jawad made a number of recommendations to combat rampant deforestation, including directing resources to promote alternative energies other than wood, and establishing programs to reduce poverty.
