Assessment of Climate Change in the Zitava River Basin
Beata Novotna
Geographic focus: The Slovak Republic / Nitra, the Zitava River Basin
Date completed: 2002
Climate conditions affect all stages of the water cycle. Beata Novotna, a student at Slovak Agricultural University in Nitra, Slovak Republic, used GIS to create a hydrological model of the Zitava River Basin. Recognizing that weather patterns and land characteristics together control many elements of river systems, Beata analyzed the model focusing on how climate change and agricultural practices might affect water quantity and quality in the future. Beata believes that GIS technologies hold great promise for analyzing data at the temporal and spatial resolution appropriate for hydrological modeling, and recommends that additional parameters be included in future models.
