Information on agrarian conditions is essential to carry out the administrative tasks of local government. Freddy González, a student at the University of Panama, used GIS to analyze maps of land cover, demographic information on farmers, and land unit size and ownership within the Panama Canal Watershed and surrounding region. From the results of his analysis, he made several recommendations, including the introduction of more techniques to increase productivity of cattle farms, the establishment markets, and—considering the proximity to urban areas—promotion rural organizations.
