A Prosperous Environment and a Prosperous City

Geographic focus: Turkey / urban areas of the country
Date completed: 2002
Urbanization in Turkey was largely unplanned, which represents a serious problem given that 75% of Turkey’s population lives in urban areas. Two high school students from Ankara, Turkey, studied the history of urban development in their country and its associated environmental consequences, which in turn affect quality of life for city residents. They then created a map of their own city as well as a model city to compare different methods of the organization of urban areas. They recommended more public transportation options in Turkey’s cities, particularly subways, which contribute less noise and air pollution.
