GeoMentor Case Study:

William Lyons

Name of the School, School District, and/or Group you collaborated/are collaborating with: Shelby County Public Schools- Heritage Elementary School

City/State of School, School District, or Group: Waddy, Kentucky

Grade level of students you or your educator collaborator work/worked with: 3rd and 4th grade

Subject/topic of class/group you assisted your collaborator with: Geologic Hazards- Sinkhole formation and mapping

Approximately how many students were engaged in GIS activities through this collaboration: 50

How did you connect with your collaborator?  I was a former student at Heritage Elementary and Mrs. Harris was my former 3rd and 4th grade teacher. She reached out to me directly based on what she was seeing me work on for my graduate degree at Kentucky State University.

Describe your collaboration process. I was asked by Mrs. Harris to present on geology and natural hazards, specifically sinkholes. We emailed back and forth several times over two months planning dates and times that worked best for the two separate classes.

Describe the tasks you assisted your collaborator with. I brought an activity from Project Underground which allowed the students to plan out their own city and avoid areas where sinkholes were present. Prior to the activity I gave a brief presentation on how sinkholes for and how to spot them using LiDAR and UAV imagery.

What available resources, if any, did you use or help your collaborator use to implement GIS in K-12 education? I used material from the Project Underground Education Program to teach students about sinkholes and karst topography.

What did you gain from the experience? What do you think your educator collaborator and/or the students gained? I gained valuable experience in developing coursework for the students and teaching them about GIS and geology in ways they can understand.
