GeoMentor Case Study:

Darron Pustam

City/State of School, School District, or Group: Rancho Cucamonga

Grade level of students you or your educator collaborator work/worked with: 5th Grade

Subject/topic of class/group you assisted your collaborator with: The Science of Where - A geography lesson with ArcGIS Earth

Approximately how many students were engaged in GIS activities through this collaboration: 30

How did you connect with your collaborator? My daughter attends Victoria Groves Elementary. Mrs Duran is her 5th grade teacher.

Describe your collaboration process. I met with Mrs Duran a couple of times on this.It took about 2 weeks total and had to fit into the pre-spring vacation schedule. I worked in an introduction to geography and used the class project as the basis for showing the functionalities and capabilities of ArcGIS Earth. The interaction allowed the students to not just read about places but to visit them and add their own content to points of interest.

Describe the tasks you assisted your collaborator with. Mrs. Duran was doing a class project that would have benefited the kids with an immersive experience of 3D and ArcGIS Earth. She organized the day, time and worked with the school staff to prepare the computers. I helped install ArcGIS Earth on some of the machines.

What available resources, if any, did you use or help your collaborator use to implement GIS in K-12 education? I was able to get some books from esri. These contains maps drawn by kids from all around the world. I also used some google card boards also provided by esri to show some of that experience.

What did you gain from the experience? What do you think your educator collaborator and/or the students gained? The students gained an understanding of how the location and geography of their class project state directly influences agriculture, economy and other attributes.

If your GeoMentoring engagement activities were documented through a classroom blog, school website, group’s social media post, newspaper or other media, please provide the websites of those posts. Esri article to follow.

Any additional comments about your experience? This was a great experience for me as the Product Manager for ArcGIS Earth. I have shared this experience with our customers including those in the Military. Their comments were - if kids can easily use this powerful application within minutes of being introduced to it. Then it significantly lowers the barrier for adopting ArcGIS Earth for exploring any part of the world and investigating and create 3D and 2D map data.
